JAMES H. SWEENEY, JR
OBITUARY
James H. Sweeney, Jr., a resident of New Canaan since 1963, died October 25, 2012 at age 93. He was born on January 24, l9l9 at Camden, New Jersey and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania as an electrical engineer in 1941. He spent four years of active duty with the United States Army during World War II including service in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was discharged as a Captain in the Signal Corps.
Following the war, he joined the General Electric Company where he worked for 4l years. During those years he held various management positions including Marketing Manager of Semiconductor Products, General Manager International Sales Headquarters, General Manager International Projects Department, Manager Product Planning Computer Group, and Manager International Distribution.
After retiring in 1982, he established Retirement Counseling Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit public education foundation dedicated to helping individuals and groups of individuals plan for retirement. He conducted seminars for thousands of individuals worldwide and developed over 700 individual financial plans for retirees. He is a member of the New Canaan Senior Men's Club.
Mr. Sweeney is survived by his three sons, retired Colonel Robert Naj Sweeney of EWA Beach, Hawaii, James H. Sweeney III, Sr.VP Kgen Power Management of Houston, Texas , and Sean P. Sweeney, Chief Engineer at Praxair, Bittiford, Maine, and five grandchildren and two great granddaughters by Naj and Rebecca Sweeney and two granddaughters by James and Veronica Sweeney. He is also survived by two daughters, Evelyn S. Voerman of Cary, NC and two grandchildren and two great grandsons and Charlotte S. Knowlls of Greer, SC and two grandchildren by a previous marriage.
