Obituary of Joseph Liska

Joseph G. Liska, age 88, a New Canaan resident for over 58 years died Friday, October 19, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Brooklyn, NY August 10, 1924 he was the son of the late Joseph and Bertha Sprandel Liska. Mr. Liska was the husband of the late Evelyn Liska who died in 2007. A WW2 US Navy Veteran and long time reservist, Lt. J .G. Liska was a 1949 graduate of the University of Rochester. He worked for Union Carbide for 40 years in their industrial gases and welding division, but his true life’s work was his devotion to his family, his home and community activities. With his wife Evelyn he cheered his son’s through years of youth baseball and football, and he himself coached the Cub League baseball Robins for 10 years. He was a “Super Fan” of the NCHS football Rams for decades. He had a passion for flounder fishing, home remodeling and gardening/stone work. He revived his childhood love of pigeon fancying, raising and showing birds for over 40 years, serving as president of numerous local and national clubs, and achieved the status of Master Breeder. In retirement he joined Weichert Realty and later Realty Guild of New Canaan. He also served as town constable, and was a member of the Senior Men’s Club. Joseph is survived by four sons, J Brant Liska and his wife Karen of Kennett Sq., PA, Craig A. Liska of Voorhees, NJ, Mark A. Liska and his wife Marie of Falmouth, MA Gary B. Liska and his wife Veronique of Kennett Square, PA and 7 grandchildren. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday October 24, 2012 at 10:00am at the Congregational Church of New Canaan, Park Street, New Canaan, CT 06840 with interment to follow in Lakeview Cemetery with full Military Honors. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 4 to 8 PM in the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street New Canaan, and CT 06840 In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Staying Put ,PO Box 484, New Canaan, CT 06840 or Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Fairfield County, PO Box 489.
