Obituary of Virginia Appleby

VIRGINIA J. APPLEBY, FORMALLY VIRGINIA CERRETANI OF NEW CANAAN DIED PEACEFULLY ON OCTOBER 13, 2012. SHE WAS BORN IN TULSA, OKLAHOMA ON, JULY 15, 1923. HER BELOVED PARENTS WERE ROY EDWARD AND EFFIE DOVE STEPHENS JACKSON. VIRGINIA ATTENDED THE UNIVERSITY OF TULSA, OK FOR TWO YEARS AND WAS A MEMBER OF KAPPA DELTA SORORITY. SHE CONTINUED HER EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA WHERE SHE MAJORED IN ART. THERE SHE MET JAMES SCOTT APPLEBY AND IN 1944 THEY MARRIED. THEY RESIDED IN WASHINGTON, DC WERE HER HUSBAND WAS RAISED. VIRGINIA WAS ACTIVE IN MANY CHARITIES AS WELL AS ON MANY BOARDS SUCH AS THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, ST JOHNS ORPHANAGE, HOUSE OF MERCY FOR UNWED MOTHERS, THE NATIONAL SYMPHONY, AND PRESIDENT OF THE EPISCOPAL WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF ST MARGARET’S CHURCH. IN 1957 SHE MOVED TO NEW CANAAN AND THEN MARRIED LAURENCE DOMINICK CERRETANI OF NEW CANAAN. SHE WAS ON THE LADIES BOARD OF THE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH AND PRESIDENT OF KAPPA DELTA SORORITY ALUMNAE OF FAIRFIELD COUNTY. PRIOR TO MOVING BACK TO NEW CANAAN, VIRGINIA RESIDED IN KEENE, NH FOR 17 YEARS. SHE CONTINUED HER PASSION OF VOLUNTEERING WITH THE KEENE CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN RED CROSS. SHE IS SURVIVED BY HER FOUR CHILDREN, SCOTT B. APPLEBY, III OF BANNER ELK, NC, VIRGINIA APPLEBY RUST OF PURCELLVILLE, VA, LAUREN F. CERRETANI OF NEW CANAAN, AND ANTHONY F. CERRETANI OF MT KISCO, NY., A DAUGHTER IN LAW, JOANN CERRETANI AND A SON IN LAW, JAMES RUST. IN ADDITION TO HER CHILDREN, SHE WAS A PROUD GRANDMOTHER AND GREAT GRANDMOTHER TO SHANE GRANT SMITH, TIFFANY LEE SMITH, JOSEPH LAURENCE CERRETANI, LAURENCE DOMINICK CERRETANI, II, AND SCOTT BROOKS APPLEBY., AND HER GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER, JEWEL BRYTE APPLEBY. HER SPIRIT WILL ALWAYS BE WITH US AND HER LOVE WILL REMAIN IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER. WE WISH EXPRESS OUR SINCERE APPRECIATION TO STAYING PUT OF NEW CANAAN, THE NEW CANAAN AMBULANCE CORP. AND NEW CANAAN POLICE DEPT. A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD ON OCTOBER 21, 2012 AT 2:00PM AT ST MARKS CHURCH IN NEW CANAAN IN THEIR CHAPEL. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, VIRGINIA’S WISHES WERE FOR DONATIONS TO BE MADE IN HER MEMORY TO EITHER THE RED CROSS CHAPTER, C/O JOANN ELIE 83 COURT ST., KEENE, NH 03431 OR ST. MARKS CHURCH IN NEW CANAAN.
