Obituary of Joan Pickering
Joan Re Pickering, of Ormond Beach, Fla., a native and former resident of New Canaan, passed away on Friday, Sept. 14, in Ormond Beach. She was 83 years young.
Joan was born on June 16, 1929, in Norwalk, daughter of Fernando Re and Hanorah (Murphy) Re. She lived in New Canaan for 70 years before moving to Ormond Beach.
Growing up in New Canaan, Joan attended Center School and graduated with the spirited New Canaan High School Class of 1947, always returning to New Canaan for class reunions.
After graduation, Joan attended the Dalcroze School of Music in New York City to continue her passion of singing and the opera and performed at the Metropolitan Opera House. Joan graduated from the Stamford Hospital School of Nursing as a RN in 1955.
Before her retirement in 1998, Joan was a private duty nurse at Stamford Hospital and Norwalk Hospital, a RN for Dr. James Crane, M.D., and ran the Stamford Alumni Nursing Registry for private duty nurses. She ended her career employed at the Stamford Hospital Outpatient Clinic.
Mrs. Pickering was very active in the New Canaan community. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Troop Leader and volunteered with the Center School PTA. She was an avid tennis player and an eight and a half gallon blood donor for the American Red Cross.
After retiring in 1998, Joan moved to Ormond Beach, where she had a residence since 1983, to enjoy her love of rug hooking, entertaining, travel, music, and cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers. She was a member of the Palmetto Club where she served as treasurer. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Daytona Beach, participating in the Daughters of the King, the Hospitality Committee, ECW, and F.A.I.T.H.
Joan was politically active with the Democratic Club of Northeast Volusia County, and chair of the Ways and Means Committee. An original founder of the Democratic Women’s Club of Volusia County, Joan also served as a Precinct Committeewoman for Precinct 522 and attended monthly Democratic Executive Committee Meetings.
Joan was predeceased by her loving spouse, William V. Pickering, her parents, a son, Edward Nolan Pickering, a grandson, Andrew William Teibel, and her brother, Gene.
She is survived by her son, William V. Pickering Jr. (Chip) and wife Ruth Ann of Raleigh, N.C.; her daughter, Pam Pickering Teibel and husband Howard of Ashland, Mass.; along with six grandchildren, William V. Pickering III, Keith Edward Pickering, Michael Ryan Pickering, and Elizabeth Anne Pickering of Raleigh, N.C., and Maximillian Nolan Teibel and Philip Edward Teibel of Ashland, Mass.
Joan will be missed by her extended family and her many friends.
