Obituary of Walter Slattery
Walter R. Slattery of New Canaan, Connecticut May 1, 1924 – August 16, 2012
Walter Slattery died August 16, 2012 in Norwalk, CT, surrounded by his family, after a long illness. He was 88 years old. Mr. Slattery resided in New Canaan for 42 years. He was born on May 1, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York to Roland and Doretta (Conroy) Slattery.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eileen, and three daughters; Melissa Slattery of Norwalk, Patricia Ochs of Bethel and Ann Chester of Ridgefield. He was pre-deceased by his only son, James Patrick Slattery. Mr. Slattery leaves four beloved grandsons, Dillon and Trevor Ochs of Bethel, and Kyle and Ryan Chester of Ridgefield, who will cherish his memory as a wonderful Grandpa. His sons-in-law are Douglas Chester, Jerome Ochs and Ben Guerrero.
Mr. Slattery was a proud member of the rapidly dwindling “Greatest Generation” of World War II veterans. He served in the Air Force as a navigator of B-17 bombers, known as “Flying Fortresses,” during World War II. The name of his plane was the “Can Do.” He flew 30 missions over Germany. His service to our country was one of his proudest achievements. He attained the rank of First Lieutenant in the Eighth Air Force, 305th Bombardment Group. He served from 1943 through 1946. A favorite among his rich store of WWII stories was the story of his return to the United States from England aboard a navy trouper vessel, after a terrifying journey dodging enemy submarines across the Atlantic.
Mr. Slattery studied Accounting at Fordham University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. He attended an MBA program at New York University at night, which he left to become a Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He served in the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover, first in Los Angeles and then in San Francisco before returning to New York in 1953. His great love of the state of California inspired several of his children to makes homes on the west coast. He was a lifetime member of the J.Edgar Hoover Center for Law Enforcement and Former Special Agents of the FBI.
Once back on the east coast, he worked for 22 years with Edward H. Daly and Thomas A. Yawkey, a former owner of the Boston Red Sox, as a security analyst. Mr. Slattery became a Chartered Financial Analyst and was a member of the New York Society of Senior Security Analysts.
Mr. Slattery was a devout Catholic who served in the C.Y.O. at St. Matthew Church in Norwalk. He was a member of the Holy Name Society at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan.
Mr. Slattery was an inveterate letter writer to the New Canaan Advertiser and a great champion of transparency in local and federal government. He often invoked the Freedom of Information Act in his later years, both in his personal research and as a private investigator for the O’Connor Agency in Stamford.
He ran for New Canaan Town Treasurer in the early 1980’s but lost the race. He had an abiding interest in the accurate pricing of electricity and other utilities, and spent many years pursuing this at the state level. Throughout his life he remained interested in local and national politics, and he always turned out to vote in local and national elections.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered in his memory on Monday, August 27 at 10 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan. Internment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan.
