William Robertson Bach of Madison, Connecticut and formerly of New Canaan, Connecticut died on Friday morning, July 27th, 2012 at the age of 80 years old. Bill Bach is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Lucy-Ann, and their children, Alison Bishop, Meredith Bach, Kirstin “Cricket” Cush, Lauren Sapienza and Kimberley Como, and 11 grandchildren. He was brother to A. James “Jim” Bach also of New Canaan and Robert “Bob” Bach of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Bill was a third generation New Canaanite and a graduate of New Canaan High School in 1949. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954 and served as a Recon Tank Platoon leader in Germany achieving the rank of First Lieutenant in the United States Army. He began his career as an Advertising Executive in New York until he assumed control of the Bach family business. He became the third generation Proprietor of the Melba Inn from 1970 until 1998. Bill was elected to the New Canaan Town Council in 1978 and served in various positions for an unprecedented 20 years, and Chairman of the Town Council for 10 of those years. He spear-headed the project for the Lou Moreno Town Clock that now stands in the center of New Canaan on Elm Street. Moving to Madison, Connecticut in 1999 did not lessen his desire to serve. As an historian, Bill headed efforts for funding and construction of the town clock on Main Street and the James Madison Memorial Garden and statue that now stands as a landmark in front of the former Town Hall. Bill also Chaired the Madison Republican Town Committee for three consecutive two-year terms. Bill piloted his own airplane and held a Commerical Pilot’s license in Airplane Single and Multiengine Land, Sea Plane Rating and Certified Flight Instructor. For many years he flew to his summer home on Lake Warren in East Alstead, New Hampshire. In addition to being a pilot, he was an active photographer, sailor, scuba-diver, skier, bee-keeper marksman, historian, writer, reader, life member of the NRA, proud Republican and a true Patriot. One of his closest friends recently said, “More than any other friend, I was always happy to be in his company. I felt good every time I’d see him”. He was a loyal servant to his community, his many friends, and his family. A wake has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 31, 2012, 4-7PM at Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St. New Canaan, CT 06840. The Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 1st, 2012 at 10 AM at St. Aloysius Church, New Canaan, CT.
