Obituary of William Pickering

William Varson Pickering (Bill), of Ormond Beach, Florida, a native and former resident of New Canaan, Connecticut, passed away on Tuesday, April 24th in Ormond Beach. He was 83 years young. Bill was born on June 26, 1928 in New Canaan, Connecticut, son of James Nolan and Sarah (Evans) Pickering. He lived in New Canaan for 70 years before moving to Ormond Beach. Growing up in New Canaan, Bill went to the Little Red School House on Carter Street. He attended Wright Technical School where he began his career as a plumber. A United States Navy veteran, he served on the USS Des Moines between World War II and the Korean War. Before his retirement in 1998, he was owner and operator of William V. Pickering Plumbing and Heating of New Canaan. Mr. Pickering was very active in the New Canaan community. He was a 50+ year member of the New Canaan Volunteer Fire Department #1, where he was a volunteer firefighter and served as Assistant Chief. He was a member of the Exchange Club in New Canaan. He coached in the New Canaan Little League and was a Scout Master for Troop 45 at Saint Aloysius Church. After retiring in 1998, Bill moved to Ormond Beach, where he had a residence since 1983, to enjoy his many interests of fishing, crabbing, stamp and antique collecting. He continued his love for cooking with numerous volunteer clam bakes and the annual Pickering Family Reunion in Arlington, Vermont. He was an active volunteer with the Volusia County Democratic Executive Committee, the Northeast Volusia County Democratic Club and the Volusia County Women's Democratic Club. Bill was predeceased by his parents, James Nolan and Sarah Pickering, a son, Edward Nolan Pickering, a grandson, Andrew William Teibel and 4 brothers, James, John, Harry and Frederick. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Joan Elizabeth Re Pickering, his son William V. Pickering Jr. (Chip) and wife Ruth Ann of Raleigh, NC, his daughter Pam Pickering Teibel and husband Howard of Ashland, MA; 6 grandchildren, William V. Pickering III, Keith Edward Pickering, Michael Ryan Pickering, and Elizabeth Anne Pickering of Raleigh, NC, and Maximillian Nolan Teibel and Philip Edward Teibel of Ashland, MA. Bill will be missed by his extended family and his many friends. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. June 16 at St. Aloysius Church, 21 Cherry Street, New Canaan, with Monsignor Scheyd officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
