Obituary of Janice Mead

Janice McDaniel Mead, 81, Long Time New Canaan Resident Janice McDaniel Mead died Tuesday, February 21, of breast cancer. Jan and her husband Wally have been residents of New Canaan since 1972 when they moved from Pennsylvania. Janice was born on February 16, 1931, daughter of Buford A and Georgia B (Schwaner) McDaniel in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.. She graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1949. She was married to her high school sweetheart, Wally, in 1949 in Pocatello, Idaho. They lived in Nebraska, Denver, Colorado, and Ambler, Pennsylvania before moving to New Canaan in 1972. Jan was an avid bridge player and loved doing the New York Times crossword puzzles. She was a also a voracious reader particularly enjoying fiction. She worked at the Pennsylvania National Bank, Lord and Taylor’s and volunteered at Next to New, a consignment shop operated by the New Canaan Women’s Club. She is survived by her husband, Walter Mead, a daughter, Mary Elizabeth, of Eugene, Oregon and a son, Charles and his wife, Lori Porter Mead. of Trumbull, CT. She also leaves six grand children and three great grand children. She was predeceased by a son, Christopher of Berkley, MI. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church at 23 Park Street in New Canaan on Saturday, March 3rd at 2:00 PM. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony.
